RE:Re: AppleWorks 5 Limit

My "creation" of the larges file possible in AppleWorks consisted of
creating margins of 0 and 0, then 16,249 lines of "x" with a "return" at the
end of each line. This allowd 77 "x" on each line, with the c/r the 78th
character. Remember, computers regard c/r as a character -- so it counts.
You can only get 77 characters if you don't put in c/r.

After the last c/r, it takes you to the 16,250th line--but you can't enter
any more characters.

This AppleWorks file was 1,332,504 bytes long -- remember, AppleWorks files
have control overhead (invisible characters). When I saved that file as a
text file, it was 1,267,188 bytes.

This file, created by AppleWOrks and saved as text COULD NOT BE LOADED by
AppleWorks. It was then to long. The reason? Because it became more than
16,250 lines long when trying to load it. That's because the default
margins are one inch -- thus increading the number of lines. Yes, I know
AppleWorks 5 allows you to create your own default margins. However, I
discovered that it still loads in with the 1" margins, THEN does the
necessary formatting to your custom default -- thus preventing the load of
large files.

ProTerm allows you to create AppleWorks files longer than you can load with
AppleWorks (I've done it by accident by daily appending my saved capture
sessions). I would like to know if there is a program to break up large
AppleWorks files into smaller chunks. I created a crude AppleSoft BASIC
program to do it, but I have to let it run overnight for large files.
