I found the article I was looking for...it's from a supplement to
Family Computing dated October 1995 and cites OTA (Office of Technology
Assessment) data in stating there were 5.8 million computers in use in
K-12 schools of which nearly half (49%) were "older 8-bit" computers and an
additional 26% were 8088-based.
They were drawing a line at machines that were capable of driving a CD-rom,
AND PROBABLY made their case based on faulty assumptions about the capabilities
of Apple //es and IIGSes, among others.
I have the supplement in my posession and it contains some interesting
articles about the direction in which things were being headed (a definite
I*M machine bias).
Hyperstudio had a full-page ad in the supplement plugging the M*C and I*M
versions...too bad it didn't note the Apple II's abilities to use this
program, for it hyped the program as being able to prepare and present
CD-ROM type presentations....
