Decoding Binaries

I'm new to the newsgroups, and while roaming around alt.binaries,
instead of finding a viewable image, I found a long text file that began
something like this: 

section 1/1   file 198309.jpg   [ Wincode 2.7.3 ]

I've also seen some that are .zip files and look like this:

Cut here...........Cut here.............Cut here.............
a bunch of code..............................................

How to I decode pictures like this on my Mac?  I've tried copy/pasting
them to Simple Text and opening the text file with ZipIt and DropStuff,
but I can't get an image that is useful.  What is the easiest way of
decoding these?  Any help would certainly appreciated.
