Nathan is right, Apple never sold the IIgs with a fan installed. But,
they did offer the fan as an "add-on". Other vendors also carried
this fan (Alltech still does.) It is a simple addition to make and
many users have installed their own fan to save on cost. I bought
a fan and installed it to the side of my powersupply using a couple
of plastic wire ties.
The base IIgs system can get along fine without a cooling fan. But,
once expansion cards are added its time to think about cooling off
your IIgs. So, just leave your fan in place it does no harm and if
you have some expansion cards it is probably of some benefit.
One note, on the ROM 01 it has been said that a fan can produce a
background static noise over the sound circuitry. This is only of
note if you deck out your IIgs for sound.
