Hi c.s.a2,
I don't understand all the talk about why Amigas are (were) better than Apple
II*, what real-world advantage GS users have been enjoying thanks to the GS'
color display, etc.
Things have gone bad for those who loved the Apple II, but still it sounds very
unprofessional when people are recommending an alternate strategy to a company
that hires loads of (overpaid) execs. Unfortunately, decisions not always base
on things like technology or user satisfaction. There are shareholders, wimps
in the board of directors, or a CEO who has been attacked by a biker early in
the morning and just feels like making some tough decisions. *Nobody* knows how
the world would look like if Apple had continued producing Apple IIs. (Maybe
I'd writing this in "Microsoft Worgs" now..:) )
It's totally unrelevant whether the GS is superior to any other machine or
not even worth serving as a printer spooler for Macs, Colecos, gameboys or
call-screening device for handies. Some even claim it's the best doorstop ever
produced. The point is that what makes this computer unique can't be expressed
in benchmarks or the number of buttons on the keyboard. This holds true for
virtually any computer. (Maybe not so much these days because they all seem to
approximate to each other.) If you love your Apple II*, be proud of owning one.
If you hate Apple IIs, you're not supposed to read this here.
So, please stop this discussion. A 200 Mhz PowerPC *has* more punch than a
2.5Mhz 65816. An Amiga *can* draw more sprites because the engineers decided to
throw in a few extra chips. A SoundBlaster *does* have a greater dynamic range
than the Ensoniq.
But none of them can play Alien Mind. Well, not without a little help. :-)
Enjoy,
bozo
