I'll give you a concrete example...

I used to write for inCider/A+ magazine. When inCider/A+ went out of
business, the copyrights reverted to the parent company of inCider/A+.
Since the parent company is MacWorld, I contacted MacWorld to see if they
would re-assign the copyrights - on the articles I'd written - back to
me. They did.

So, just because a company goes out of business means nothing as far as
copyright is concerned. Someone still has the copyright.
