This just in from Tom Larson, who doesn't have a working Internet email
address right now so he's asked me to pass here:

Mush,
Hey now that I think of it, could you pose the following questions to
the comp.sys.apple2 newsgroup? (You know you want to :).
1. Is there a 600 dpi driver for an HP Deskjet.
2. Is the source code (Apple) for binscii available anywhere.
Anyway the reasons I ask are that I've been playing around with the
Harmonie deskjet 550c driver and have managed to make it do real 600 dpi
but the document formatting is messed up and it's *really* slow.
Abnormally slow and crashes the next time you use it (so I'm guessing
this is a memory issue or something at least in part). I don't know
enough about drivers to fix it (shyeah, right) unless I get lucky. No
need to go into details when asking the question though.
BTW: I don't know how much printing you do or anything but I really like
my newish DJ600 and now that it's discontinued you can probably pick one
up for cheap (I saw $150).
