Cool.  I got it working shortly after I posted the request...it seems that
my 3link cable is slightly flaky, but using my modem cable instead of the
printer cable solved the problem.  Time to pay Micro Center a visit...

I got the Psion because it will do the things I want to do on the road. 
When I'm traveling by car, I just throw /RAVEN (my enhanced //e with the
Vulcan-20 that used to be in the GS) in the trunk and set that up in the
motel room.  I almost set it up on a picnic table at Knoebel's Amusement
Resort, but the fact that I had gotten a late start due to car trouble and
the fact that I wanted to take a few more Phoenix rides instead.  But next
month I'm taking a trip by air, and if I took along /RAVEN, I wouldn't be
able to take along anything else.  So I'll throw my modem into the
suitcase and slip the Psion into my pocket, and I will be all set 8-)

So far, I've been pleasantly suprised at how useful this thing has been,
and I think it demonstrates what I said long ago about where there might
be a market for another Apple ][...as a cheap notebook machine, most
likely a notebook ][e based on the Mega-II.  But since Apple doesn't build
it, and I didn't want to wait for the Tiger (which might not quite be it
anyway), I bought the Psion.  I did get some strange looks when I was
typing away while waiting in line at Kings Island, though...  8-)

Lamenting the end of the roller-coaster season...
