That's an extremely interesting bit of information. I wonder if there's a subtle issue with transmission packet size? I know you don't have deliberate and visible settings for this that are out of the ordinary, but perhaps something along the way is storing up DDP packets and simply never forwarding them?

There are little PCI card wi-fi adapters available that may work better than that Linksys (I had one of those on my Tivo for a while and it did not work very well).
