I do not totally agree with it. This is because I know the European Apple II
"community" somewhat, at least the Dutch part.

When we bought our Apple IIgs back in 1989, I didn't know of ANY OTHER Apple
user (nor Mac, nor Apple II) in the Netherlands, exept for the second hand
dealer we got the IIgs from.

Now, how do you expect me (and other stand-alones without modems) to find new
software that's in the USA? How do we find out about User's Groups? It took me
until September 1992 to find out there were more than 3 Apple IIgs users in
Holland, and that there is a UG called Klokhuis.

They then all declared the IIgs was dead, so how was I (and many others)
supposed to think that there was still Apple II software being made? There was
NO way untill 1995, when I got on internet, to find out about the latest
things. It was since 1993 that I got a modem, and dialed some USA Apple II
BBS's, but who else was so crazy to do this for (at that time) $ 1.50 per
minute??

So, it was not alone hacking, but mainly Apple itself who was due to the death
of the Apple II. I *BET* there are thousands of people out there with an Apple
II(gs) who still don't know anything else than to copy software from friends.

I seem to be the Apple II guru here in the Netherlands. That's why I started
publishing Dark Castle Magazine (first in Dutch), to support and inform the
other folks around about the Apple II. That was what really DID revive the
Apple II here! Now alot people know there is still software being made for the
II, but they didn't know in the past. Our UG didn't write about it either,
simply because they didn't know. Why? Don't ask me...

So you can't blame someone copying a disk, when he only knows 2 or 3 other
Apple IIgs folks "around", mostly at a few-hours-ride distance. It just takes
a few years to know/ learn what's going on, how the Apple II world is, and
what & where software is being made.
