The PC-Transporter is certainly not the only option. You can use
a SCSI card and floptical drive, a BlueDisk card and PC drive or an
Apple II 3.5 Disk Controller Card and SuperDrive. I've been able to
read 3.5" double-density (720K) MS-DOS disks with the latter option
on my system.

Incidentally, the PC-Transporter is closer to an IBM XT. It's
CPU is a NEC-V30 processor, which is basically the same as the
8086 with a couple of 80186 instructions (but far from being a
real 186, let alone even a 286). It is also CGA with 640K, the
typical setup found an IBM XT. "AT" class implies an 80286 CPU.
