Because doing so would be a violation of Apple's copyright. Brutal
Deluxe would not have been able to legally distribute a modified copy of
"System 6.0.2" without appropriate permission from Apple.

They WOULD have been able to distribute a program which patched System
6.0.1 to turn it into "6.0.2", but I don't know if this is what they
were planning.

Assuming Joe has 6.0.2, he has the end product, not the patch program,
thus it cannot be distributed.

That is a rather cynical attitude. There have been a few cases where a
product has been released, but the source code has subsequently been
lost due to hard drive crashes. Why should this be any different?

I've certainly lost (small) projects due to disk failure without
backups. I'm generally more careful now (at least enough to protect
against hard drive crashes - no attempt to do offsite backups).
