Re: Applesoft commands

Nathan,
Thanks for YOUR help! My in-laws live >600miles away and I have a week
to work on it. Thanks for the info on the chr$(4). Without a manual,
odd things like that make me wonder if I'm doing things correctly.

Also, I did spend an hour searching around on web pages for the
Applesoft BASIC commands and agree that this would be a nice addition
to the FAQ (or at least a pointer to them). (I was writing the program
with an increment of 50 on the line numbers).

I also was wondering about memory. I stumbled on fre(x) to tell me how
much memory is available. Does the - number mean (32768 - (-N))? I
vaguely recall this from the days I helped someone else with a IIe and
assumed the IIc was the same. Does a lot of the 128k get used by BASIC?
The IIc vintage is (255) in the 64447 location (I think that is the addr).

  Thanks again for your help!

: Yes. That was because Basic was written to be independent of the
: OS, and the OS basically intercepts prints to see if it's an OS
: call. Control-D (chr$(4)) was chosen as the prefix to all OS calls.

: >I can't figure out renumber (is this part of the basic BASIC?).

: There've been a lot of good books written on that subject; look
: around a used bookstore for a bunch of old ones. [Yes, I should get
: around to adding in a pointer to a list of Basic commands; that'll
: happen one of these weeks.]

: Renumber is useful mostly only for renumbering programs; if you
: wrote your program with enough spacing between lines (i.e. increment
: by 10 or so) you'll rarely have any need of it.
