Sure doesn't hurt, however, you don't "need" one.

I'm a big fan of GW3, however, I almost always do my writing using
AppleWorks Classic and then import it into GW3. The advantage of GW3
is that the output looks better, more fonts, etc. I wouldn't
characterise it as one of my favorite editors - however - it is my
favorite lay out program.
I would strongly advise you to:
1. Use AppleWorks 5.1 for your writing.
2. GW3 with pointless and either a laser or ink-jet printer for
output.
