Actually, titles like Space Fox and Defender of the World are
adaptations of a Japanese video-game called "Gradius". Comparing it
to Atari's Defender is going a little too far back... :)

My favorite power-up is the fireball (magma), especially if you
triple it's power. That should get you right through to the end of
level-1 or higher.
I should mention a little easter-egg though. Pressing Apple-Q
during play will instantly advance you to the next level. This
allows you to jump to level-3 and see the parallex scrolling or
screen-shaking earthquake effect (nice with an accelerator).
IMHO, this is one of the best shoot-em-up games available on
the IIgs, my only complaint is that it could use more professional
looking graphics (and perhaps a bit of background music, as in
the original Gradius :-)
