For the Apple IIGS, the GNO/ME multitasking environment provides a
reasonable fascilime thereof. Given that the GS has no memory
protection, virtual memory and the like are out. Also, the GS is
limited to 64K (more like 40K in practice) of stack, memory hogs such
as gcc and X windoze are right out. However, a rather nice shell,
ports of many commonly used unix programs, etc are available. Take a

For Apple IIs before the GS, nothing really exists.
