If you have a joystick, or anything plugged into the internal or
external game/joystick ports, unplug it. If the system boots fine w/o
such a thing, then the joystick is broken and reporting that its
buttons are pressed. That'll force the self-test.
General rule of thumb when troubleshooting: unplug _EVERYTHING_ not
absolutely needed and see if the problem still occurs. On a GS, that
usually means only the CPU, Monitor, and keyboard. Start adding
components (powering off when doing any cable connections or
disconnections) until it starts failing. The last component you added
is most likely at fault.
