You sure the Disk ][s are plugged into the thing that says "DRIVE 1"
on the card in the computer?

If it is "SYNTAX ERROR" instead of "?SYNTAX ERROR", then DOS *did*
somewhat successfully load.  If you can actually type in lowercase,
don't.  Most commands need to be in uppercase.

Try booting without any cards installed.  Maybe one is loose? (I
remember getting the random characters thing when I pulled a
disk-controller card out of my Franklin Ace 1000 while it was on.)
