There were a few multifunction cards for the Apple II; I remember
seeing them advertised on the back of Nibble Magazine way back when.
Most of them physically sat in one slot, but due to rom trickery, they
"occupied" several slots. Thus, it'd look like serial cards in slots 1
and 2, but two serial ports hung off one card.
There was also one that claimed not to eat slots; not sure how
it worked offhand. (Might have required special drivers or patches).
If you post which brand that dual-port serial card of yours is,
someone who actually used one like it might be able to help much
better.
