Are you talking about 5.25" or 3.5" disks?
For 5.25" disks: definitely not. The disk uses a considerably different
magnetic coating, which can't even be formatted by a single density or
double density drive.
For 3.5" disks: it works to some extent, but is not reliable - again,
the disk uses a different magnetic coating, and a high density disk
formatted as double density will lose its contents much faster than a
double density disk.
