Power-up difficulties

Ever since I got my ZipGS, I've been having this problem.

Whenever I powerup my GS, the system hangs at the startup screen
(ROM 03 screen).  If I press Ctrl-Reset, the display switches to
40-columns and screwy text (every other lettter of the 80-column
screen.

My solution has been to not power down my gs very often, but when
I do have to powerup, I turn on the computer, wait about 15-20
minutes, then press Ctrl-OA-Reset.

Question:  by this technique of powerup, am I hurting my gs in
any way?  (green light on ZipGS is off during warmup).

Question:  can anyone guess at the problem, and (even better!)
guess at a quicker solution?
