The only time I've found that useful is when my stereo's CD player had to
go away to get repaired (I wrote a program for an Apple IIe clone to allow
it to play audio CDs, so that I didn't have to tie up my IIgs).
I've always found the audio CD play facilities rather clumsy on the IIgs,
since they are too dependent on being in a desktop program. I spend most
of my time on the IIgs in ORCA/Shell or ProDOS-8 software, and having to
go back to a desktop program just to play a CD is rather cumbersome. It
also has the annoying habit of stopping audio play whenever you switch
operating systems or reboot.
On the Mac (and OS/2, probably Windows as well) the player program is
never far away (unless you're playing a full screen game, in which case
you probably don't care about the CD anyway!), so it much more convenient.
