True, I could probably count all Apple II specific CD-ROM disc titles
in existence, on the fingers of one hand! (Well, perhaps I may need the other
hand with the new releases from SSII and DigiSoft :). And of those titles,
virtually all of them are simply mass storage for archived files, meaning
you do not require a CD-ROM to use them. It is just a convience. The only
exception I know of is, a preschool educational title called YourWordBox
for the IIgs.

Yet there are other reasons for owning a CD-ROM, especially considering
the older 1X and 2X (external SCSI) drives can be found for under US$30-$40.
It makes a nice method for playing musical compact discs for one. Another
is the vast amount of Mac/PC discs containing hundreds of megabytes of
generic files, most of which are usable on the GS (ie, MOD, WAV, GIF, JPEG).
These often sell for no more than a few dollars! DiscQuest is another
interesting application, although it's limited to only a handful of titles,
making it just a taste of what you can do with CD-ROM storage.
