yes, these things were made by Apple. I know of two others in existance.
(I've seen one of them, and I have no reason not to believe the other person
I know who claims to have one.)

yes, it is a prototype. The one I saw even had a sticker saying something
like "This prototype unit has not been FCC certified. Not to be sold, lent,
or leased."
