It sounds like you modified your system file and the system crashed while
you were doing it.  You need to do a clean install of your operating
system by loading the "Install System Software" program off your Performa
CD and pressing Command-Shift-K at the Install screen.  It will prompt you
for "Update System Folder" or "Install New System Folder" (close to that),
and you want to pict "Install New System Folder".  After it is done,
reboot, then rebuild your desktop (holding down Option and Command while
booting).  You system should then boot fine.  You can manually copy your
extensions back in (not the apple ones, but the one's you've added, for
example, AfterDark is a non-apple init/extension).

REMEMBER: If you are going to modify ANY file in your System Folder
(ESPECIALLY System, Finder, or any Update file), make a COPY of it first. 
Only work on a COPY of the system file, since then, if the computer
crashes, you only screw up the copy, not the essential real McCoy.
