A few weeks ago, someone reported that the HCGS .bxy files on
ftp.support.apple.com caused their GSHK to crash and/or generally
misbehave. What do I do? I download it for myself and try it out.
Can't replicate it. Can't replicate it at all under any circumstances.
What do I do? Recommend a 6.0.1 and GSHK reinstall.
Lots of other people have also reported some flakiness over the
past few weeks, usually without making sure it happens twice in a row,
or even 1/5 of the time. What can I do? Save them to an expanding pile
of unrepeatable reports and hope that one day I notice a common
thread that I can hunt down.
Not to disparage any of those who've reported things recently, but
it helps to be real specific (e.g. someone can point to a file and
say 'GSHK pukes on _this_ file, but Shrinkit 3.4 does fine', I can
try investigating it.
I need to be able to see misbehavior from a bug before I can hunt
it down, conclusively determine the fault, and conclusively fix it.
Without hard evidence of misbehavior right in front of my eyes,
debugging is like reading War and Peace to spot the comma that's out
of place somewhere in the text. Being able to narrow it down to
a chapter or page is a HUGE help.
