Actually, it should be noted that there are several key combinations. One
totally disables your internal HD. There is another one that merely gives
external peripherals (or just the CD-ROM?) preference during startup. 

Disabling the internal HD is not a good thing. (You won't be able to see it on
the desktop and thus can't fix the things you've broken.)
Skipping the internal HD is a good thing.

In order NOT to be flamed by some FlameStation fanatics (Joe Klone is screening
all my messages and just waits for a good opportunity to flame me...:-) ), some
rules are worth mentioning, regardless of the platform:
- if you do not know what a System folder is and have considered deleting it
because it takes up so much space
- if you do not have a backup ready
- if you do not know how to boot from an emergency disk
- if you download software and do not know exactly what it does
- or if you wonder where all the icons come from

THEN do not start modifying system resources.
