Just another lost Mac-doofus in the wrong group. The control strip is a control
panel most prevalent on Powerbooks (hence the mention of battery power in the 
original post) which gives you handy access to machine settings. Since it's
on the screen all the time, kinda like the idiot MS Office toolbar on brand
X hardware, I keep it turned off on my powerbook.
