AppleWorks 5.x will NOT run from 5.25" drives. It must be installed
onto a hard drive, or you can run it directly from a 3.5" drive.
You must have at least 256K of RAM as well, though I'd recommend 512K.

I'll second that. I didn't find much of major significance that was
added in AppleWorks 5.0, though I've probably got used to whatever was
added, and I'd miss it if I went back to 4.x....
The new database features in AppleWorks 4.0 were a godsend
(particularly glossaries, import and formulas).
