I have an Macintosh SE running System 7.5.3 (latest system) just
fine. It makes a great file server for the GS and also comes in handy
when it comes to extracting SIT archives or other GS inaccessible formats.
With 4 megs of RAM in it (max) you have about 2.5 megs free for
applications. It is slow, but it is usable for many tasks that the GS
doesn't have software for. But yeah, a lot of new apps require a 020
processor to run (ClarisWorks 4.0, Print Shop Deluxe). However, since
many of this older machines can be picked up for free because people don't
want them (I got three of them this way) anymore, I think GS users should
grab them up, install the latest system on them, and use them as file
servers.
I wonder, doesn't Derek Taubert's GS/TCP package contain an
application or something that allows you to hook up to the internet via
appletalk on a mac? I might have found yet another use for that old
machine.
