One general tip is this:
When you use any kind of Prodos 8 communications program, just hit the key
"8" at startup, i.e. before the GS/OS screen appears. You will then boot
into Prodos 8, where you type "bye" followed by a return. The prodos 8
program selector will show up, and you're able to load Proterm or any other
P8 program now.
Since you've not loaded GS/OS now, you won't loose any characters anymore.
I have a 28.8k SupraExpress modem on my GS, and when I read a binscii'd or
uuencoded file, it will arrive 100% OK at my end!
