Look on the top, inside, by where the control panel is. See if
there's a magnet on the lid (very dark piece glued to the inside.) If
it's not there, look inside the frame and see if you can find it.
When I worked at Shreve Systems, we saw SEVERAL that the magnet
had come loose from. Since that's how it knows the cover is installed,
the error message was "Cover Loose".
For those that bypass seat belt buzzers, you CAN remove the top
and bypass the reed switch on the control panel. HOWEVER - the printer
won't know that the cover !IS! open if you do this ...
I have one friend who wired a SPST toggle switch he purchased from
Radio Shack across the reed switch. He can now disable the printer at any
time by flipping the switch, but doesn't need to leave the cover on unless
he so desires.

Oh, but it !IS! part of the platform. It's an indicator ring
that's used to keep someone from cranking too far around while trying to
adjust the color balance on the color ribbon. Don't remove it!
