Vulcan 20 question

Arghs!

I have a 20Mb Vulcan-GS hard drive, which, until about two weeks ago,
provided faithful service to my ROM 01 IIgs. On the IIgs, the Vulcan has
been replaced with a nice 250Mb SCSI drive and controller; once I get an
appropriate cable built, the SCSI drive will inhabit the case formerly
occupied by the Vulcan mechanism.

This has left me with a 20Mb IDE mechanism, and the Vulcan controller.
And two ][e's (one enhanced, one not) to put them in. With a little bit
of surgery (i.e. drill four holes into the ][e basepan and tap the power
supply connector), the 20Mb drive is now snuggled nicely into my enhanced
][e.

When I first tried to re-format the drive (hey, I don't need all that
GS/OS stuff on a ][e...), I could not get the partition manager to run on
the ][e. In fact, I couldn't get it to crash consistently...each time I
ran it, it would do something different.

Okay, so perhaps the partitioning software doesn't like the ][e...though
the manual implies that it should run. So I hooked the drive back up to
the GS, and the drive worked just fine. I re-formatted it, and it is now
called "Raven." But when I put Raven back into the ][e, I discovered that
it would not boot (though it booted the GS into ProDOS-8 just fine). And
when I booted ProDOS (same version as on Raven), any time I tried to
access the drive, I got a crash into the Monitor.

Now, the Vulcan manual implies (by providing switch settings), though does
not specifically say, that the drive and card will work on a ][e...in
fact, will work on a ][+. But this has not been my experience so far!
Could it be that the Vulcan card ROM includes some 16-bit code, or some
other strange feature that prevents its use on an enhanced ][e? Does
anyone know of a workaround? Any suggestions at all? I'd really like to
use this drive on my ][e. Do I need to use my UNenhanced motherboard?
Has anyone else tried this?

HELP! I was hoping to have this thing working this weekend, but so far
the prognosis is pretty poor...
