IIGS HELP???

I've got a Ramkeeper and it used to work about a year ago. I took it out
because of the continuous crashes, thinking that was why. But am getting
the External ibm power supply soon. I'd like to use this again and get up
to 8 meg(I've already got 4 meg). Well there is a black chip or something 
to the right and below the green light toward the back of the card with 3 
leads going into the board and it seems to be black as if it got hot at 
one time or another.
        My question is can I replace this piece on the board. I just
tried to use it as before with 4 meg + 1 meg and it wouldn't boot. Took
out RamKeeper and put the 4 meg back in and GS works fine.
        Also is there anyone out there who knows if there is anyway to
upgrade this board for more efficiency?
	And why can't I use my 4 meg and an 8 meg with the Ramkeeper and 
get 12 megs on the GS. Somewhere along the way I read that you could get 
up to 16 megs in a GS. (That'd be nice!!!)
