RE:IIGS question
I went on the waiting list for an Apple IIgs in November of 1986 and got
mine in February 1987. The standard package deal was the original pre-ROM01
(it was not called ROM00 then) which included 512k -- 256 on the logic board
and 256k on the card whicg could later be expanded to 1 meg. Having moved
from a 64k Apple IIplus, I thought I could save some money and asked the
dealer if I could take it without the memory card. The reduced price, for
"breaking up the package deal" was only $10, so I took it. Of course, I
said to my dealer, and he agreed, "who would ever need more than 512k?"
Now my same IIgs (upgraded to ROM01) has 4.25 megs, and I'm looking for
another 4 megs, as I keep running out of memory -- in classic AppleWorks, if
you'll believe. I've created many large files, and when I try to load a
dozen or so 200 to 600k files, I get a "beep" before they are all loaded
twlling me my disktop isn't big enough. I need more memory! Use those
files to copy and paste between them.
By the way, the standard IIgs configurations Apple practically gave away to
schools was 512k -- which soon became too small for practical use, and
schools wouldn't pay to upgrade. Many schools didn't even bother to get the
free ROM01 upgrade, and those ROM00 512k IIgs's became nothing more than
not-so-fancy IIe's.
