Well, if you have the Orca or GNO shells, you could use cjpeg to make
jpeg images from a variety of other formats (GIF, PPM, Targa, etc.),
although converting a jpeg image from a gif often creates quite a bit
of distortion. So, there is a program that will create jpeg's, but
there are very few that produce images that would benefit from jpeg
compression. Converting a 3200 color image to a jpeg would still be
a bit iffy, because (at least in my understanding) you are still limited
to 16 colors per scanline, with a different palette for each line
(200 lines * 16 colors/line = 3200 colors). So you run into the same
problem of trying to use jpeg compression on an already-quantized image.
I think that there's also a bug or two in the GS port of cjpeg that I've
never bothered to track down, because I didn't think that cjpeg would
get a lot of use :)
