I've found GSHK to be a pretty solid program. Have you tried using it
after shift-booting? You may have a conflict of some sort.
GSHK does do error checking on the validity of the file. I can't see
offhand how a bad file could be crashing the program! Not to say it
couldn't, of course.
FYI the 8-bit ShrinkIt 3.4 has a more robust SDK unpacker than GSHK does.
GSHK normally cannot unpack 5.25 SDK archives that were made with ShrinkIt
3.4, but ShrinkIt 3.4 can unpack =any= GSHK 3.5 or 5.25 SDk archive, even
GSOS ones.
