All versions of Appleworks will run on an enhanced IIe with sufficient memory. AW3 and AW4 will work on a 128K machine, but the desktop is teeny, and either will give you carpal tunnel syndrome from all the disk swapping if you don't have a 3.5 drive.
My recommendation is to get =any= version you can get your hands on from AW3 to 5, as they all are light years better than AW 2.1.!! You don't know what ease-of=use features you are missing right now! For best results, you'll want at least a 512K RAM card, and AW4 and AW5 benefit hugely from a small hard drive or a pair of 3.5 drives.
I don't know about AW 2.1, but all the later versions have a "print to disk" feature in the print menu.
