There is an old program called Aptest that tells you how much your 
head alignment is off. You use any properly-formatted disk for the 
test; it simply reads it.  It's still trial and error, but at 
least it shows you how close you are and in what direction. 
(Actually, it's REALLY trial and error, because tightening the 
screw moves it quite a lot.)

I don't know where all you can get it; it's in the public domain 
now.  I know that Joe Kohn sells it.
