Can GS read/init 1.44 disks?

The only way i have been able to use 1.44 disks between my GS and 
PowerMac is by covering the extra writeprotect notch.  It fools the Mac 
into thinking it is a 800k.  Otherwise the Mac thinks it needs to be 
initialized and wont read it.

1.44s initialized on the Mac in Prodos are unreadable by my GS.  

I havent noticed anything in this group about this.  Perhaps i wasnt 
paying attention.  Am i missing something?
