It does sound like the "Unknown" identifier is getting lost.

You may have more than one ICONS folder. If there are folders on
other, non-boot, partitions, try this ...

On each non-boot partition with an ICONS folder, create an XICONS folder.
Move the partition's entire ICONS folder into XICONS.

Copy a few of the Unknown type files to some folder on hard disk.

If there are diskettes or CD-ROMS with ICONS folders, eject them.

Move all icons except a known good copy of "Desktop" out of your boot
partition ICONS folder to some other folder.

This should leave you with only one ICONS folder-- the one on your
boot partition-- in which resides only a known good copy of "Desktop".

Boot the hard disk. Open the folder with the Unknown type files.
"View" by name. The names of the Unknown type files should be listed and
type should be shown as "Unknown". Doing an "Icon Info" check for a file
should result in Kind being shown as "Unknown".

If things seem to be working correctly, you will know that somewhere,
among the ICONS folders and icons you moved into other folders, is a file
or files which caused the problem.
