Start with developing keyboarding skills then step up to word 
processing applications that have some USEFUL purpose. Write 
letters, summarize class or school surveys, record weather data - 
anything that engages them and doesn't patronize their abilities. 
Also, don't overlook the power of programming as a teaching tool. 
The most important thing to keep in mind is that educators want 
students to develop their higher-level thinking skills and not 
merely the operation of a particular machine. Kids with some 
meaningful work to accomplish via the standard work tools on an 
older computer plus come programming in BASIC will be far better off 
than students who spend hour after hour playing with Kid Pix on a 
PowerPC.
