it could be the cable or something, but my guess would be the init string
-- as weird as it may seem, this can make the biggest difference between
something working properly and you getting pissed off and ready to eject
it from the room...

i've found that adding %C1 and &D2 to the init string helped out this
problema ages ago (check your modems manual for their functions - i forget
exactly what they're supposed to do...)
