That sounds more like the modem is overheating.  Try it with the modem 
out of it's box as see if the problem goes away.  If it works for a while 
with no problems, the cable is not the problem unless it has developed a 
bad connection, which would not follow a repeatable pattern of working for a 
while and then not.

Unless:  The reason a high speed modem cable is required is that hardware 
handshaking is more reliable at high speeds than Xon/Xoff.  There can be a
problem where Xon/Xoff is working for you at high speeds most of the 
time, but either the computer or the modem will not allways react to an 
Xoff in time, and the buffer will run out before sending stops.  It takes 
some time for it to recognize the Xoff code, and if it didn't look right 
away at it...  The HS cable prevents this because the hardware control 
pins are reacted to immediatly by the chips involved.  If the buffers are 
increased in size, it will reduce the effect of the problem, but not 
eliminate it.
