Actually the ImageWriter II is still in production, or
at least was the last time I checked Apple's price list. It is
the only dot matrix printer Apple still sells. To answer your
question about production runs (excluding of course thermal,
daisy-wheel, inkjet and lasers by Apple):
- Apple DMP (October 1982 - late 1983)
* - Apple ImageWriter I (December 1983 - to December 1985)
* - Apple ImageWriter II (September 1985 - to present)
- Apple ImageWriter LQ (early 1988 - to ?)
* Notes: The ImageWriter I also came in a wide carriage version.
There were a few revisions to the ImageWriter II over
the years, the original snow-white model, followed by
the platinum model and then the "II/L" (as it was known
internally) which had a built-in buffer and much lighter
powersupply.
The LQ was basically a 27-pin version of the IWII, though
it was short lived mainly due to cost ($1300) and size (twice
as large as IWII and weighed over 38 pounds). I don't know
the exact date it was introduced and discontinued, sorry.
