: They all refer to the same computer. The plethora of designations
: comes partly from the original name logo. It shows "IIGS" with the "GS" in
: smaller caps than the "II". Since, in normal text, there is no convenient
: way to shift font size, most writers use "IIgs" to make it clear that the
: computer is the GS edition of the Apple II series. When the context is
: such that everyone knows you are talking about Apple II stuff, then "GS"
: is equivalent to "IIgs".
Not to mention that the use of "][" is an anachronism that goes all the
way back to the original Apple ][ and Apple ][+. Although the original
unenhanced //e's said "//e" on the case, but "Apple ][" on the splash
screen. The enhanced ][e's say "Apple //e" on the splash screen, and the
][c's all say "//c". I think the slashes might be a bit ominous
considering that the ill-fated Apple /// was written "Apple ///" instead
of "Apple ]I["...
