You can get to the command mode with OA-L then go to Line Status and hit
<right-arrow> and a couple of returns and you are in the command state.
The first command should be a ATE1 which will turn on the echo.  After you
are done with the command state hit OA-L again go to line status and hit
<left-arrow> and a couple of returns and you are back to your normal
on-line mode.
