Slight quibble: AppleWriter is NOT public domain. Version 2.1 (the
last ProDOS version) was re-released as Freeware. No previous version
is available for distribution, and the documentation is not available.
There is a difference between Freeware and Public Domain.

As has been mentioned in many recent posts, grind has moved to
"ground.isca.uiowa.edu". Caltech is gone, but the archive should be
back somewhere else in the near future.
