These are some snippets about Apple's new CEO from various publications.
Personally, my mind soars with the thought that our CEO has a PhD in
Physics. Physics, IMHO, is digital poetry.

This said, let us also pay due hommage to Mike Spindler. He did a LOT of
good stuff for Apple.

"Industry observers said the seeds of National's resurgence were sown in
January 1991, when Gilbert F. Amelio replaced semiconductor legend
Charles E. Sporck as president and chief executive of the Santa Clara,
Calif.-based company."

..

''I think a lot of National's success can be credited to Mr. Amelio,''
said Dean A. McCarron, principal of Mercury Research, Scottsdale, Ariz.
''He needed to make changes and they have been clearly correct ones to
turn a profit.''

Gil Amelio: From CCDs to CEO: NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR'S CHIEF POST-SPORCK
STRATEGY

Electronic Engineering Times June 17, 1991 p. 137 ISSN: 0192-1541

BY TERRY COSTLOW Though CEOs have an enormous influence on a company's
bottom line, Gil Amelio is one of the few who actually contributes
something to it. The new president and CEO of National Semiconductor has
a number of patents for CCDs that are still drawing revenue from the
Japanese suppliers who use them in video cameras and many other products.

..

"We want to be co-designers," he explained. "Our people have to
understand the application so well that they can be partners. We have a
lot of experience--we just have to mobilize it." Mobilizing that
expertise will be a key move for Amelio as he begins to put his own stamp
on National, which is about halfway through the repositioning begun by
long-term chairman Charlie Sporck. "My task is to see the repositioning
through," Amelio said. "We need to change from just a high-volume,
mass-commodity parts manufacturer. In addition, we have to serve
application-specific, design-driven markets. Today, customers want more
than assured delivery, they want more value built into their designs.

..

"Rebuilding Rockwell was a very exciting period in my life. I had to
focus them on what they could win at, to position marketing by
applications instead of technologies. I also had to turn to what the
company knew, to take that to the customer and service it.

..

Along with the multiplicity of packaging alternatives, Amelio feels
National has to continue to be a broad-line supplier. "We have to have
balance between commodity products and high-end applications. We can't
survive or serve the customer if we just make glue logic. We'd like our
product portfolio to match the mix of the customer's system, as opposed
to being skewed toward either end. That is the strength of National."

THE MAN NATIONAL IS PUTTING ITS CHIPS ON : For Gilbert Amelio, Charles
Sporck will be a tough act to follow Business Week February 18, 1991; Pg

TEXT: Gilbert F. Amelio is an old hand at solving problems. Shortly after
being named head of Rockwell International Corp.'s semiconductor division
in 1983, he went calling on Japanese customers. One maker of fax machines
complained that the chips in Rockwell-made modems were breaking down. So
Amelio promptly returned to the U. S., picked a team of 13
troubleshooters, including the modem plant manager, and put them on a
plane to Japan. "I told them not to come back until they had the problem
fixed," he recalls.
