The only real way is to hook up a fast modem and go for it.

The "test" is as follows:

  1. Turn on the power with no disk in the drive.
  2. Press CONTROL-RESET to stop the disk drive operation.
  3. At the "]" prompt type CALL-151 and press the return key
  4. Type FBBF and press the return key.

a FF means you have the eldest ROM's and should have the serial port 
problem... however, my IIc also has the eldest ROM's and has no problems 
at 9600.  

Go figure.
